Mr. Quarren: Well, I am based out of Chicago.....where the two lived. If you and Mrs. Edwards can come to my office within the next couple of weeks to get the reading of the will and signing of the papers out of the way...that would be great.

Mr. Quarren: Thank you for your promptness in this matter...and I'm sorry for your loss.

Alex: Yes.... thank you Mr Quarren......

He hangs up and leans back in his chair, stunned.

Elizabeth: Oh, breakfast. Yummmm! I....dad? What's wrong, dad?

Alex: Oh.... Liz...... um.... some very good friends of your mother and I just passed sweetie......

Elizabeth: ...They died? Who? Do we know them?

Alex: It's Mr and Mrs Gaines honey.....

Alexis and Natalie walk out to the main room.

Alexis: No, it's out block, down block, up block...

The sad silence in the room causes her to stop short. Natalie looks around, confused.

Natalie: What's wrong?

Alexis: Where's Nick?

Alex: Nick is out with Gabe.

He goes over to Lexi and takes her hand.

I just got a phone call sweetie..... Mr and Mrs Gaines have passed away.

[Pockets]

Alexis stares at Alex.

Alexis: ... what?

Elizabeth: Wait...that elderly couple that always came over like every month? The one lady brought mom vanilla coke cupcakes and they would have tea?

Alex hugs Lexi.

Alex: I'm sorry honey.... they went peacefully in their sleep.... together.

He looks to Elizabeth.

...that's them sweetie.... they helped your mother and I out a lot when we first started out as a couple.... we've been friends a very long time.

[Pockets]

Natalie: Well that sucks... they were cool.

Alexis tears up.

Alexis: It just... I didn't think they were that old. I know they weren't sick or anything....

[Cruel Britannia]

He strokes Lexi's hair.

Alex: They were in their Nineties hon..... it was just their time.... and they went together.... something tells me they wanted it that way.

[Pockets]

Natalie: Come on, Lizzie. Let's get a little more practice in.

Alexis lets Alex comfort her for a bit, then wiping her eyes, she looks up at him.

Alexis: When is the funeral? I want to be back home for that.

[Cruel Britannia]

Alex: That's why their lawyer called me..... they didn't have any family..... they named us as their son and daughter.... they left us in charge of their estate.... we're meeting their lawyer when we get back so we can make arrangements.

[Pockets]

Alexis stares again.

Alexis: They... named us...?

[Cruel Britannia]

Alex: It would seem Mrs. Gaines was infertile..... they never had children of their own.... apparently we were the closest thing they had.

[Pockets]

Alexis: Oh... wow....

[Cruel Britannia]

Alex: We'll give them a good send off sweetie.

He smiles.

A half-awake Connor emerges, still in pajama bottoms and black Darth Maul tshirt
He walks past, and out on the the balcony, climbing up on the the wide square pillar making up the corner and sitting cross legged. His eyes close as he breathes deep, part of his usual morning routine for the past year.

Elizabeth: ....Why would you give everyone a gift basket to remember the Gaines?

Alex clears his throat.

Alex: Welllllllll.... um... whenever mummy and daddy were too....... busy to go get groceries.... Mr and Mrs Gaines would sometimes send us a gift basket full of the..... bare necessities.....

Natalie: Oh ewww!

Alexis takes the opportunity to see to her sleepy-eyed son.
