he looks into the hospital, seeing Dr.Jordans heading towards Alexis and Alex. Colin walks into the building to join them

Dr.Jordans: "Your father suffered a heart attack. He was lucky, it wasn't minor, but it wasn't as bad as it could have been. Tell me...was your father under any stress lately?"

Colin can't glance at Alexis and her apparent new fiance

Alexis had straightened up with the arrival of the doctor. His question makes her stiffen, and she gives Alex a nervous sidelong glance.

Alexis: We... me and my brother... had a falling out with dad a long time ago, and we were getting together for dinner for a reconciliation, I think. My bo... fiance had an apparent disagreement with dad though. Would something like that have caused the heart attack?

Alex can't speak. He runs his fingers through his hair as if trying to pull it out and all he can do is stare at Alexis remorsefully, wanting her to know how sorry he is but knowing no words will suffice.

Alexis looks over at Alex worriedly. She won't look at Colin.

Alexis: But....

She looks back over at the doctor.

Alexis: Dad recently decided to quit drinking, straight up cold turkey... and he's an alcoholic. That would have been a factor too, right?

Dr. Jordans: As it stands right now, we are waiting on a couple more test results to determine the severity of the liver damage...but just from preliminary reports, I'm suprised the man was up and walking around. Just the ammount of surface tissue damage...there is really no telling how bad that organ is. If I may ask...how long has your father been drinking...and how often?

Alexis: He was drinking from before I was born, and from what I remember it was almost constant. We hadn't seen him for a while before recently though.

The doctor's words sink in.

Alexis: There's something wrong with his liver too?

Dr. Jordans: There is. The problem could be severe. Understand, everything in the body is connected in some way. So the drinking could have caused his blood pressure to rise, thus making his heart beat faster...and under the added stress of that and a stressful situation...that could lead to a heart attack. Nurse: Doctor? Some test results came in for Mr. Barnett.

Dr. Jordans: Oh, good. Listen, I have to go take a look at another paitent's test results...but I'll be back as soon as I learn anything new about your father's situation.

Alexis leans back, takes a deep breath, and glances back over at Alex.

Alexis: I know you didn't mean to put dad in the hospital.

She tries to grin.

Alexis: I've seen you when you mean to put someone there.

The half-hearted joking falls flat and the almost-smile quickly disappears.

He glances over at Alexis and Alex and decides to cancel the message

Colin looks at the ground

Colin:"Maybe if none of us had seen him period...this wouldn't have happened."

Alex: They don't allow families in the room while they're running tests, they tend to get in the doctor's way.... but the fact that he's stable enough for them to be examining him so thoroughly is a good thing.
